Poke Yoke: design a process that cannot fail

Poke Yoke, or Poka Yoke, comes from the Japanese word for “mistake-proofing”. A Poke Yoke process is a process that cannot fail: for example because 1 step cannot be performed if the previous one is not successful, or because the person performing the process cannot make a mistake without being strikingly aware of it, or anything that can prevent failure modes.

Take the example of an ATM machine: the cash is not coming out of the machine until the card is removed, making impossible the fact that one forgets the card in the machine.

With a bit of creativity and imagination, plenty of Poke Yoke tricks can be added to any process, making it “mistake-proof” and less prone to human errors: drop-down lists preventing from forbidden values, validation formula that would write the result in red if it is out of a pre-defined range, an escape loop in a workflow tool that would send an e-mail beyond a certain time after which a task should be completed…
